Illustration by Peter Gehrman The first time I watched Brené Brown's The Call to Courage special on Netflix, I experienced a range of emotions. I told myself I would write a blog post about this really important topic that I know a lot of scholars, students, and professionals face.... that was July 2021.
Today is January 17, 2023 and I've finally found the courage to say what I've been wanting to say for over a year.....

artwork by Jenny Tomlinson "wherever your attention goes, energy flows" -unknown In my opinion, everything holds energy... especially our mind. If this energy isn't released from the mind, it may present itself physically as heart and lung complications, digestive issues, acne, just to name a few. As a good friend of mine once said, "it's all psychosomatic." In this blog post, I discuss the "jar method" that, along with journaling, has helped me transmute and release energy making space for my blessings to flow in and remain a part of my reality.
We often walk through life holding on to someone else's image of us. What do think of when you hear the term "mirror work" ? We could interpret this concept many ways, but at its core mirror work is all about deep love for the person in the mirror. Who is the person in the mirror? When was the last time you connected with that person? Mirror work can guide you back home. 💚
Our bodies and minds are connected.
Ever notice your muscles feel tense when you're anxious? Do you tend to hold a lot of stress in your muscles? Some may hold stress within their face or upper body. I know for me, I tend to hold stress in my back and neck muscles. But what do we do about this? .... Progressive Muscle Relaxation!
It allows us to take a moment to be self-aware and achieve full body relaxation. The good thing about this is, you can practice progressive muscle relaxation anytime! "Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do" I couldn't find a more accurate picture. For most, a good part of what occupies our mind during our 20's is "what is my purpose? why am I here?" Dissecting life, dissecting ourselves, dissecting our family, dissecting our culture even. It can all become overwhelming at times. Trust me, I know. BUT! There's a method to the madness. Here's how it all went down...for me at least.
As I was reading Soothe Your Nerves by Dr. Angela Neal-Barnett, an award-winning psychologist, she mentions a few natural herbs that will help with anxiety. Especially during these uncertain times, knowing how to care for our bodies (physical and spiritual body) is extremely important. Nature's remedies have always been a part of my culture and many other cultures around the world, let's dive in...
design and concept: David McCandless As the world becomes more in tune with "self" and what "self" actually is, the more we explore different realities and ways of healing self. This exploration has lead to major advances in medicine and in the world of holistic healing. Let's dive in....
"I just need a moment to vent" It's not simply a new wellness fad. Journaling can be for any occasion, any person, or any day. There’s misconceptions around journaling that it’s something we only do in times of high stress or it’s something only women do to manage their emotions. Both of those statements couldn’t be far from the truth. Pen-to-paper type journaling will be our focus in this post.
"Quiet Time" has found a deeper meaning
Most of us have probably seen the viral article which explains how some schools are implementing meditation practices instead of detention for children who misbehave. What do you think?
Moments of mindfulness or guided meditation might be a crucial step in helping children be present with themselves and understanding their emotions. It may also help children decrease stress levels, reduce anxiety, and increase focus. But how do we get children to sit still, let alone focus on their breaths? The trick is to let them tell them to watch you and mimic your movements, stretch, breathe, and repeat. Children are naturals when it comes to mimicking our movements, you'll be surprised to see them sit down and simply follow suit. "Deep breaths are like love notes to your body" -unknown Breathing is an involuntary action that no one ever seems to pay attention to but it has loads of benefits no one talks about. Deep breathing is also called diaphragmatic breathing, abdominal breathing, belly breathing, and paced respiration. We all know that breathing is essential to life but how often do you actually take a DEEP breath? 🤔
